Frequently Asked Questions
An on-line* Claims Process was available on this website from September 11, 2025 to December 12, 2025 for eligible residents living anywhere in Canada outside of Quebec on December 31, 2021 who purchased Packaged Bread for their personal use between 2001 to 2021, inclusive, to submit Claims for compensation. Late Claims were not accepted.
Persons under the age of 18 years, estates, persons who opted out of the class actions, and the officers and directors of the Loblaw/Weston group of companies were not eligible to submit a Claim in the Claims Process.
Claimants needed to supply information identifying themselves and confirming their eligibility. No proof of purchase was needed to file a Claim.
The Settlement Administrator determined a claimant’s eligibility and the compensation payable if the Claim was approved based on the information submitted with the Claim and the terms of the Distribution Protocol.
Compensation for approved Claims started to be distributed by the Settlement Administrator the week of May 11, 2026, by Interac e-Transfer or cheque, depending on the payment method chosen by the claimant.
Yes, persons who participated in the Loblaw Card Program could submit a Claim for compensation under the settlement prior to the claims deadline. If your Claim was approved, you will be entitled to the amount by which the settlement compensation exceeded the $25 Loblaw Card benefit you previously received.
The definition of the Loblaw/Weston settlement class for the Ontario class action is: All Persons resident anywhere in Canada except Quebec on December 31, 2021, other than Excluded Persons (defendants and related parties), who between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2021, inclusive, purchased Packaged Bread, either directly or indirectly that was, produced or distributed by a defendant.
If you reside in the province of Quebec, please click HERE.
Class actions were certified/authorized by the Ontario and Quebec Courts on behalf of residents in Canada alleging that certain manufacturers and retailers of Packaged Bread engaged in anti-competitive conduct resulting in overcharges for Packaged Bread sold in Canada from 2001 to 2021, inclusive.
Packaged Bread is any and all packaged bread products and bread alternatives including, but not limited to, bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan bread, English muffins, wraps, pita and tortillas, but excluding bread frozen when sold and bread baked on-site in the establishment where it is sold.
The settlement resolves the class actions against the Loblaw/Weston group of defendants for $500 million ($96 million of which was distributed in 2018/19 through the Loblaw Card Program) and Loblaw/Weston’s cooperation to assist the plaintiffs in prosecuting the class actions against the remaining non-settling manufacturer and retailer defendants. In exchange, the class actions are dismissed against Loblaw/Weston and the Loblaw/Weston group of companies have received a full release of all claims against them in relation to Packaged Bread.
The $500 million settlement amount net of the $96 million previously paid through the Loblaws Card Program and the court-approved funder, administration and lawyers’ fees is in the process of being distributed to approved claimants in accordance with the provisions of the Distribution Protocol that was approved by the Courts now that the Claims Process is completed.
The Distribution Protocol provides for 99.5% of the net settlement amount to be allocated for the benefit of eligible residents of Canada who purchased Packaged Bread for personal use anytime between 2001 and 2021, inclusive. Those monies will be distributed through the Claims Process that is now open for Claims to be submitted.
The Distribution Protocol provides for 0.5% of the net settlement amount to be allocated for the benefit of businesses/entities in Canada that purchased Packaged Bread for resale anytime between 2001 and 2021, inclusive. Those monies are being retained in trust at this time. How those monies will be distributed will be determined by the Courts at a future date.

The amount per claimant will depend on whether an approved claimant previously received a $25 Loblaw card from the Loblaw Card Program.
If you did not participate in the Loblaw Card Program you will be paid $49.11.
If you participated in the Loblaw Card Program you will be paid $24.11.
Please note: The amount payable to claimants who chose to receive their payment by cheque will be reduced by $2.
The deadline to submit a Claim was December 12, 2025, 3 months after the Claims Process opened.
You needed to supply information identifying yourself and confirming your eligibility to claim. No proof of purchase was needed to file a Claim for compensation.
The Settlement Administrator will determine whether or not your Claim is approved based upon the provisions of the Distribution Protocol and the information you submit and notify you by email if your Claim is identified as deficient. You will have 20 days from the date of such notice to remedy the issue(s).
IF VERITA IDENTIFIED YOUR CLAIM AS REQUIRING VERIFICATION, A VERIFICATION NOTICE WAS SENT TO YOU BY EMAIL {[email protected]} BETWEEN JANUARY 26, 2026, AND FERBUARY 4, 2026, THAT REQUIRED YOU TO TAKE AN ADDITIONAL STEP TO VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY BY FEBRUARY 23, 2026.
If the issue(s) was not corrected within the 20-day period, the Settlement Administrator will have rejected your Claim.
(Please check your ‘Spam’ folder, as sometimes emails are routed there.)
No. There is no right of appeal in respect of rejected Claims.
We are now in the distribution phase of the settlement and payments began to be issued for approved claims beginning the week of May 11, 2026.
Payments are issued on a rolling basis so not all claimants will receive payment at the same time. Please check your inbox and junk or spam folder if you chose to be paid by e-Transfer.
Payment will be made by Interac e-Transfer by email from [email protected] or by cheque, depending on the payment method requested by the claimant.
Please note that because of the large number of approved claims, payments are being issued on a rolling basis and not all claimants will receive payment at the same time.
If you are expecting an e-Transfer, please check your ‘Spam’ and “Junk” folders, as sometimes emails are routed there. If you elected to be paid by cheque, $2 will be deducted from the compensation payable to reflect the additional cost of providing a cheque.
Interac e-Transfer payments to your email can be accepted for a 30-day period from the date they are issued. Cheques may be negotiated for a 6-month period from the date issued. Payments that expire will not be reissued.
